PENANG, 9 Feb – The global internet world has now been completely transformed from version four (IPv4) internet protocol usage to version six (IPv6), starting on last February.
Deputy Director of the National Advanced IPv6 Centre (NAV6), Azlan Osman said that every access to the global internet network needs different internet protocol address and the IP address currently in use is IPv4.
He said that since IPv4 can only meet the needs of 4.3 billion IP address worldwide, the limitations to IPv4 usage was announced at the IPv6 Forum in early February, thereby enabling IPv6 to meet a capacity of up to billion times more than IPv4.
"The shift to IPv6 internet usage will ensure sustainable internet usage and help to increase usage of the facility globally," he said.
He added that NAv6 which was established in 2005 under the Ministry of Energy, Water and Communications at that time was the only organization leading IPV6 initiatives in Malaysia.
"NAv6 was also responsible for providing intensive training to organizations that wanted to use IPv6," he said.
He went on to say that so far NAv6 has provided intensive training in IPv6 development to more than 700 individuals in Malaysia as well as several Asean countries.
"Changing from IPv4 to IPv6 is not easy as it appears. It is a huge challenge because changes have to be made in stages and this involves routers and equipment," he explained.
The community, he said, ought to be provided with detailed explanation as to the importance of IPV6 usage and at the same time stress the fact that internet development in the country will encounter problems once it runs out of IPV4 addresses.
